What Is the Baker 20 Setting Tool?
Like all setting tools, the Baker 20 is used to deploy different types of frac plugs downhole. It’s connected to your frac plug of choice using a wireline adapter kit. The setting tool uses an explosive charge to create hydraulic pressure, which is applied to a piston to set the plug in place. This makes your setting tool an essential part of any plug-and-perf operation.
The standard Baker 20 has a 3.8″ OD, is almost 75″ in length without the firing head, and weighs about 185 pounds, with a stroke length of 10.77” and setting force of 55,000 psi. It can handle up to 15,000 psi at setting depth and operates in bottom hole temperatures up to 400ºF.
In addition to the #20 model, Baker tools also come in #05 and #10 options, with heavy-duty versions of the #10 and #20 available. This provides a range of size and setting force options for different applications.

Baker 20 Setting Tool Redressing & Maintenance
While the Baker 20 is a popular and reliable setting tool, it needs on-site redressing after every use (no, short stroking with compressed air doesn’t count). For example, the tool’s product specs state that all 17 O-rings have to be replaced and the oil chamber refilled after every use. You’ll also need to release pressure at the surface after every run, exposing ground operators to a burst of hot, high-pressure gas.
All of these maintenance factors add extra steps to the operation, potentially causing downtime that slows down your completion. And if they aren’t done properly, there’s a risk that the seals will fail, causing pre-stroke or fluid flooding. Even the wrong amount of oil could cause the piston to stroke too early or not enough. We’re all for using time-tested tools, but when you’re working with tight timelines, one little mistake can lead to costly downtime.

Unlike the Baker 20, there’s no need for redress, disassembly, or reassembly because the PurpleSet™ is single-use. Just recycle it when you’re done and move on to the next plug. How’s that for fast, convenient downhole solutions?
Should You Use Baker 20 or PurpleSet™?
If you’re on the hunt for your new favorite setting tool, you can’t go wrong with PurpleSet™. It’s true that the Baker 20 has earned a good reputation through decades of service. But because the tool is reusable, it needs maintenance and preparation before setting your next plug.
In comparison, PurpleSet™ needs minimal prep time, has an auto-pressure release preventing HSE events on surface, and integrates seamlessly with your plug-and-perf products of choice. Contact us to learn more about PurpleSet™ or to add it to your completion.
